Hurricane Melissa is a powerful Category 5 storm posing a serious threat to the lives and livelihoods of Jamaicans. In its aftermath, recovery will take every helping hand. Together, let us stand ready to protect and help families recover, rebuild homes and restore livelihoods once the storm passes. The Board of Directors of the American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ) has announced the establishment of a $1 Million Matching Fund to support critical relief and recovery efforts in Jamaica following the devastating impact of Hurricane Melissa. This fund, created and underwritten by AFJ’s Board of Directors, will match dollar-for-dollar all donations made through the organization’s official donation channels. Donors who contribute via corporate matching gift programs are especially encouraged to participate, as these contributions will also be eligible for the match.

Hurricane Melissa, a powerful Category 5 hurricane, made landfall on Jamaica's southwestern coast on October 28, 2025. With winds up to 185 MPH, torrential rainfall, and extensive flooding, the impacts are expected to be catastrophic. Multiple fatalities were reported prior to landfall, power has been lost, and homes and infrastructure will face devastating impacts. Multiple other Caribbean nations are also at risk as the storm moves through the region in the coming days. The following organizations have mobilized emergency response teams and committed critical resources to disaster relief efforts. Please note that the organizations included in this Fund are subject to change as we learn more about needs on the ground.

Stichting Ambulance wens fulfills approximately 2,000 wishes per year, and they have already fulfilled over 24,000. A driver and a nurse accompany each wish. They have a team of 315 volunteers for this purpose: 110 drivers, 190 nurses, 14 promotional volunteers, and one volunteer for support services. Our drivers are from the police, fire department, ambulance service, and military. The nursing team consists of caregivers, BIG-registered general or specialized nurses, and doctors with professionally recognized training. All our volunteers accompany each wish at least once or twice a month, and some more often.
